Open
Source (Linux)
Open Source is often mistakenly used in meaning the Operating System Linux, but the term can be applied to any program or utility to which a licence is granted for the free distribution and use of the underlying source code. Hence "open source".
Linux, of whatever flavour and of which there are many, is however the figurehead of the open source movement.
Open source development has several advantages:
- More people involved in a development project, leads to a better product with diverse thinking. The evolution element of development is accelerated.
- Fewer bugs as many interested parties test the code.
- Less vulnerable to virus attacks and security weaknesses as the working of the code is it not attempted to be held secret.
- Better support and training as documentation is more easily accessed.
- Lower cost of ownership to the user.
Open source is not however free. It operates in a marketplace of knowledge. Where support for the maintenance of the software is charged.
