What is ADSL and what will it do for me? ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a service applied to an ordinary BT telephone line (PSTN - Public Service Telephone Network). To others it is simply known as “Broadband”. It is a normal pair of BT telephone wires that are permanently connected to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Broadband enables a standard line to use frequencies far higher than can be heard by the human ear. The use of a simple filter (microfilter) ensures separation of voice and data. These high frequencies carry the data signal, leaving the lower range for normal telephone conversation. As technology improves data speeds are increasing. Some providers (ISP's) boast download speeds up to 8Mb, but 2Mb is the current norm. Advantages: High speed download, quicker connection, always on, fixed price. I've heard I can use the Internet for Free phone calls, how do I do this? This technology is know as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). This takes advantage of the interconnected nature of the Internet and the growth in bandwidth. It uses computer Internet Protocol (IP) to address other users and send voice as data. It is free, but connections are limited to: Other users using the same software, or users subscribing to the same IP switch provider. The simplest forms are those using the Simple Message Services (SMS) such as Microsoft's MSN, Yahoo's Messenger, plus many others. These only require subscribing to the service and addition of a microphone. Beyond these there are specialist providers such as Skype. These are normally considered as telecommunication companies, rather than computer web services. They offer the advantage of security and the ability to connect to the wider public telephone network. Enabling normal telephone use from your PC. It most be noted that there is a call charge for that element of the call that is carried over normal telephone lines but often at a carriers discounted rate. Advantages: Low call cost or Free, Enables the added use of video What is VPN and how can I benefit from using it?
